Here's What I Learned About Myself, Leadership, and the Human Condition.

I almost didn't share this.

It's vulnerable. It's personal. And I wasn't sure the world was ready for what
I'm about to say. But a mentor once told me: "The story you're most afraid to
tell is the story someone else needs to hear."

So here it is.

For most of my adult life, I wasn't drinking water.

Not properly. Not intentionally. I was surviving on coffee, ambition, and the
kind of quiet desperation that gets rebranded as hustle. I was performing at
maybe 60% of my capacity and calling it excellence. Sound familiar?

I remember the exact moment everything changed.

It was a Tuesday. 11 PM. I was in the office, staring at a quarterly report that
refused to make sense, when my hands started cramping. My head felt like someone
had filled it with warm sand. I looked at my desk. Four empty coffee cups. Zero
water.

And I thought: is this it?

I called my mentor — a man who has built three companies, survived two market
crashes, and once gave a TED talk that made a venture capitalist cry — and I told
him what was happening.

He was quiet for a long time.

Then he said: "Have you tried drinking water?"

I laughed. He didn't.

"I'm serious," he said. "Water. Every day. Commit to it. See what happens."

I sat with that.

THE 30-DAY CHALLENGE

Starting January 1st, I committed to drinking water. Daily. Consistently. On
purpose. Not accidentally. Not as a byproduct of other beverages. Water. Chosen.
Intentional. Mine.

I invested in a 900ml smart bottle with a hydration-tracking sensor, a companion
app that syncs to my calendar, a motivational sleeve with a quote from Marcus
Aurelius, and a Slack integration that pings my assistant when I fall behind on
intake. Total cost: $340. Worth every penny.

The first week was easy. I was excited. Beginners always are.

Week two nearly broke me.

Day 14. I hadn't noticed any change. I was still tired. Still human. Still mortal.
I texted my mentor: "I don't think this is working."

He replied with one word: "Keep going."

So I did.

And somewhere around Day 19, something shifted.

I don't have the language for it yet — I'm working with my executive coach to
develop the full framework — but the best way I can describe it is: I felt
hydrated.

7 LESSONS FROM 30 DAYS OF DRINKING WATER

1. Water is not a beverage. It's a practice.
Anyone can drink water by accident. A puddle, a rainstorm, a desperate moment.
But to drink water on purpose, every day, with full presence? That's discipline.
That's identity.

2. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
This is something leaders say about burnout, but I've realized they may have
also meant it literally. The cup was empty. It needed water. I was the cup.
I had to become my own cup-filler. I'm still processing this.

3. The body sends signals. We just don't listen.
Thirst is not weakness. Thirst is data. When I started treating my thirst as
a KPI rather than an inconvenience, everything changed. My skin. My focus.
My aura. My team noticed a shift. Two colleagues independently used the word
"glow." I did not correct them.

4. Consistency beats intensity.
I used to think I could compensate for not drinking water all week by drinking
a lot of water on Sunday. I was wrong. The body, like a company, doesn't
respond to sporadic bursts of effort. It responds to systems.

5. Environment precedes behavior.
I put a glass of water on my nightstand. I put a glass of water on my desk. I
put a glass of water in my car. I put a glass of water in a place where I would
see the glass of water and drink the water. Results were immediate.

6. The Romans had aqueducts for a reason.
I've been thinking about this a lot.

7. Access to clean water is a profound privilege.

WHERE I AM NOW

I have now been drinking water for 112 consecutive days.

I perform at a level I didn't know was available to me. My sleep has improved.
My clarity has improved. I recently made a decision in under four minutes that
previously would have taken me a week. My mentor says I seem "different." My
doctor said I was "adequately hydrated, which is normal." I heard: you have
arrived.

I'm not saying water will change your life.

I'm saying it changed mine.

When did you last drink a glass of water?

Sit with that.
